At Service Paws, we’re more than just service dog trainers—we’re passionate about building meaningful connections between people and dogs. In addition to our mission of training highly skilled service dogs for individuals with disabilities, we proudly coordinate therapy dog visits that bring comfort and smiles to schools, senior centers, hospitals, and military bases.
And that’s not all! As part of our ongoing fundraising efforts, we’re excited to offer basic one-on-one dog training sessions to help families build better relationships with their pets—all while supporting a life-changing cause.

At Service Paws in Layton, Utah, we believe that true healing begins with the bond between a person and their dog. Our mission is simple, yet profoundly life-changing: to provide professionally trained service dogs to low-income individuals, military veterans, and first responders—including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics—giving them the gift of independence, confidence, and hope.

Every dog we train carries a purpose greater than themselves. They stand beside those facing challenges like mobility impairments, diabetes, POTS, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), PTSD, and other invisible disabilities, offering not just support—but understanding, strength, and unconditional love.

Many of our incredible service dogs come from rescue backgrounds, themselves once overlooked or forgotten. Through our program, they are given a second chance—a chance to heal, to trust again, and to become heroes in someone’s life.
Together, handler and dog embark on a journey of resilience, hope, and transformation, forging a bond that can never be broken.
At Service Paws, we believe that every limitation holds a hidden possibility, and every pawprint is a step toward a brighter, freer future.

The Journey

Our Incredible Service Dogs: From Selection to Superstars!

Not every dog is cut out to be a service dog—and that’s okay! At Service Paws, each of our dogs goes through a comprehensive evaluation process before training ever begins. We carefully assess their temperament, physical health, and behavior to ensure they have the right foundation for a successful service career.

Once a dog is selected as a candidate, the real journey begins! Training kicks off with the basics, followed by structured milestones. Our dogs undergo regular evaluations at 30 days, 90 days, and throughout their training to ensure consistent progress and readiness for advanced tasks.

While we’re not breed-specific, we do recognize that some breeds naturally excel in service work due to their focus, adaptability, and drive. That said, every dog is considered based on individual merit—and many of our stars have come from unexpected backgrounds!

Our Handlers: The Heart of the Journey

At Service Paws, we use a unique and powerful approach called owner-assisted training. From day one, the service dog candidate lives and learns alongside their handler. This allows the dog to understand their handler’s specific needs, daily routines, and even recognize subtle changes in behavior or health.

We believe that building this partnership from the very beginning creates something extraordinary—a bond based on trust, communication, and mutual understanding. It’s not just training; it’s a life-changing connection that empowers both dog and handler to grow together as a true team.
